There is an over-abundance of very 'sexy' looking powerboats on the second-hand market, that look and feel like great deals, especially when offered at seemingly low prices.

Typical error made by newcomers to the sport:

Buying an 18-25ft 'Bayliner' Style PowerBoat, where this would be totally unsuitable for their needs - this type of boat is a SINGLE FUNCTION craft.   It is very good at looking 'sexy', going very fast in calm waters on dry, sunny days, with no wind, during the day-time and using A LOT of fuel.   As soon as any one of those conditions fails to materialise you will know all about it - how likely is that in Scotland / U.K.? - Very!   Most sellers will try to tell you that these craft are 'economical'.

Do not purchase this type of craft unless you are looking for a single-function boat and can afford to spend £100-£150 PER DAY on fuel, and more on maintenance.

This kind of boating is the same as standing in a cold shower whilst ripping up £20.00 notes.

These craft use hull designs and engines originally designed for the 70's USA pleasure-craft market.   You will quickly find that they can be difficult, uncomfortable and even dangerous to use in Scottish / U.K. waters, with our changeable conditions.   You could end up paying a fortune to keep and maintain the boat and engine, and spend a lot of money putting fuel and oil in them, as well as insuring them.   Many original road trailers sold with these boats are completely illegal for U.K. use, but this is often not known, even by the seller.

You would be better off buying a multi-function boat, with a smaller, more modern and economical engine that does almost the same speed, but at sometimes more than half the fuel consumption.   A boat with a cabin for sitting, sleeping and storage, a good cover for all weathers, a hull design that can take the waves, but the ability to transform into a lovely summers-day boat when needed.   You will get much more use, enjoyment and value-for-money out of this type of craft.
